Running a retail liquor store comes with a long checklist, from inventory tracking and sales to accounting and eCommerce. For Pranav Patel, owner of Augusta Beverage Center in Georgia, juggling these operations through multiple disconnected systems was becoming increasingly inefficient. That’s when he discovered Odoo, and it transformed the way his store functions day-to-day.
Founded in 1981 and now under Pranav’s leadership for the past five years, Augusta Beverage Center is a locally owned liquor store specializing in wine, beer, and spirits. Though it operates as an independent entity, it is part of a broader network of businesses managed by Pranav and his family. When he took over the store, one of his first priorities was modernization, particularly digitizing inventory and improving operational transparency.
"I started implementing computerized systems for inventory and stuff like that. We needed to be more efficient, especially as we looked to expand online."
When Software Fragmentation Becomes
The Problem
Before implementing Odoo, Augusta Beverage Center relied on a combination of QuickBooks for accounting, a separate point of sale (POS) system for in-store transactions, and Shopify for eCommerce. Managing three different platforms was not only expensive but time-consuming and prone to data silos.
“The challenge was, we had to use multiple applications to run the business,” recalls Pranav. “Managing three different things is costly for a small brick-and-mortar store. Odoo offers everything in one package.”
The cost of maintaining multiple platforms, along with the complications of syncing data manually or through automation, prompted Pranav to explore alternatives. During his research, he came across Odoo and was intrigued by its integrated approach, especially the POS, Website, and Accounting apps.
“Odoo gives us everything in one package at a reasonable cost. What you guys offer for the money is well worth spending.”
One System to Run It All
Pranav first encountered Odoo through Google searches while exploring open-source ERP solutions. Despite initial challenges on his side with the implementation, he returned to the platform after a hiatus.
"Initially, it took me some time to get the hang of Odoo. But then I decided to dive deeper, watched tutorials, read the forums, and started configuring things on my own. That’s when it everything started to click.”
Today, Augusta Beverage Center uses Odoo to manage its retail POS, eCommerce Website, Inventory, and Accounting. The Point of Sale app has become essential for their brick-and-mortar operations. According to Pranav, it works “perfectly fine,” though he believes some hardware integrations, like printers and cash drawers, could be more seamless without requiring an IoT box.
The Website app is also fully operational and listed publicly, although the business hasn’t yet fully launched its eCommerce operations. Still, Pranav is enthusiastic about its future potential. “The main goal for us in switching to Odoo was the eCommerce platform. We want to start shipping and delivering beyond our local 10 to 15-mile radius.”
Efficiency has already improved in key areas. For example, inventory management is now centralized and easier to handle. As for the Accounting module, Pranav says it is still in progress to get the full implementation. However, he notes that reconciliation, a task that previously took a day, can now be reduced to just 3 to 4 hours.
The Road Ahead: Looking Toward a Digital-First Future
Next on the horizon for Augusta Beverage Center is the full rollout of its eCommerce platform to allow deliveries beyond its immediate geographic location. Pranav is also exploring how to better integrate hardware devices with Odoo to create a more seamless in-store experience. He continues to experiment with Odoo’s suite of features and apps to find new ways to optimize his retail operations.
