Starting a business from scratch is no small feat, especially when it means managing rapid inventory turnover. For Murray Wholesale, a Toronto-based company serving independent convenience stores, the right ERP system was key to launching strong and staying competitive. From the beginning, co-owner Stafford Moss knew that Odoo’s integrated and cloud-based platform would give the new company a significant operational edge.
Murray Wholesale began operations in July 2024, but its roots run deeper. Stafford Moss, one of the co-founders and head of finance, previously owned a similar wholesale company in the Toronto area. After selling that business in 2023, he wasn’t ready to retire completely. Instead, he partnered with two colleagues to launch Murray Wholesale, handling the financial side while his partners oversaw daily operations.
The company supplies a wide range of fast-moving consumer goods, from beverages and candy to chocolates and smallwares, to independent convenience and variety stores in the Toronto Area. With over 8,000 active items in their inventory, Stafford and his team knew they needed a robust, scalable solution that could handle the demands of a dynamic wholesale business right from the start.
"We wholesale to convenience and variety stores in the Toronto area: beverages, chocolates, candy, smallwares, etc. It’s everything you see in your neighborhood store."

Starting from Scratch Without the Right Tools

Launching a new company came with significant logistical challenges. Since Murray Wholesale was a brand-new entity, every supplier, product, and inventory item had to be entered manually into their system, a time-consuming and critical task. "It was daunting," said Stafford. "We had to enter every inventory item by hand. As the goods came in, we had to create new suppliers, new inventory items, etc."
In his previous company, Stafford had used Business Vision, a Sage product, but wanted something more modern and integrated for this new venture. As they began researching alternatives, Stafford evaluated other distribution-focused solutions, including NetSuite, before settling on Odoo.
"Odoo seemed much simpler than the other software I looked at. The integration into the web (being able to set up a website and put products online) really turned me to it."

Why Odoo Made All the Difference

Stafford first learned about Odoo through a trusted IT consultant who had supported him in the past. After testing it out online and comparing options, Odoo’s ease of use, flexibility, and affordability stood out.
Since day one, Odoo has been central to Murray Wholesale’s operations. Key modules in daily use include:
Sales: Used every day at the point of sale, the Sales module powers transactions across the business.
Inventory: Essential for tracking over 8,000 active SKUs, this module helps streamline inventory management across the warehouse.
Purchase and Accounting: With Stafford overseeing the financials, the General Ledger and purchasing workflows are critical for backend efficiency. And Odoo delivers.
Odoo’s cloud-based access has also proven indispensable. “If I’ve got an issue or they call me, I can go on my phone and just look at the problem and sort it out,” Stafford said.
While Stafford admits that he hasn’t explored every advanced feature within the platform, he appreciates its user-friendly design and seamless accessibility, both for him and his staff. The software’s simplicity made training easier and accelerated adoption across the team.
Although they don't have a before-and-after efficiency metric, since Odoo was implemented from the very beginning, Stafford believes the company is better positioned for inventory control and accounting than with legacy systems he's used in the past.

"It’s a very good system. My employees can use it easily, and I can access it from anywhere. That really makes things simpler."
Odoo Powers What Comes Next
Looking ahead, Murray Wholesale’s next big step is expansion into frozen goods, which means adding refrigeration infrastructure and new product lines. But the team is taking a deliberate approach, ensuring their core operations are strong and reliable before scaling further.
While there are no immediate plans to add more Odoo apps, the current system is already built to handle future growth. With over 8,000 inventory items and daily use across multiple departments, Odoo has shown no signs of performance issues or limits.

“We’re not concerned about scaling, Odoo can handle it all,” says Stafford. “So far, we haven’t run into any limitations with quantities or file sizes.”
Murray Wholesale is proof that starting smart, with the right digital tools from day one, can lay the groundwork for scalable success. Whether you’re launching a new company or rethinking operations in an existing one, Odoo offers a flexible, cloud-based suite that supports real business needs. If you’re in wholesale or distribution and ready to simplify your systems, Odoo is the platform to power your next chapter.
